Joe Soto, Joe Warren Meet in Bellator’s First True Title Fight

Filed under: Bellator, NewsThe surge in popularity of mixed martial arts in the last five years brought with it plenty of upstart promotions looking for their piece of the pie.

A few major promotions have come along, and a few have gone away, including EliteXC and Affliction, both rather infamously.

When Bellator Fighting Championships arrived in spring 2009, it launched with a format unique enough to give it a better shot at longevity than some of its predecessors.

Using season-long tournaments, Bellator crowned champions in four weight classes in its first season. The Season 2 tournaments in those classes created opponents for the Season 1 champs to defend their belts against.

Thursday, in Season 3, in its 27th event, Bellator gets to see some of the fruits of its labor when Season 1 featherweight title winner Joe Soto meets Season 2 tournament champ Joe Warren in San Antonio. It will be Bellator’s first true title fight.

Eminem, Jay-Z Fans Recall Favorite Moments From Detroit Shows

There’s no question that Jay-Z and Eminem’s Home and Home Tour stops in Detroit were two of the biggest events the city’s hip-hop community has ever seen.

On the final night, Em and Hov fans recounted an unforgettable show to MTV News, in which rap titans like Dr. Dre and 50 Cent joined Shady and Jigga on the Comerica Park stage.
Although she “loves Eminem,” one D-Town fan gave Hov’s set the biggest props. “It had to be Jigga. Coming from underneath, giving a shout-out to [Michael Jackson], it was Jigga,” she said.
Another concertgoer said witnessing the hip-hop heavyweights rip up the stage with one of their classic collabos was her favorite moment of the night. “Probably when Eminem and Jay-Z got on the stage together [for 'Renegade'],” Lindsay said, describing the show highlight. “That was pretty tight.” Fellow audience member Bridget echoed the same sentiment, bellowing, “Renegade!”
Some fans loved when Em made a move that few hip-hop stars have the clout to pull off, and brought out his mentor, Aftermath kingpin and rap pioneer Dr. Dre.
“My favorite part was when Dr. Dre came out,” said Jen, who was accompanied by a fellow Doc-loving pal. “We’ve been … big [fans] for forever.”
As Jay-Z and Em signed off from the Motor City, many fans were amped they were able to witness the historic show firsthand.
“I’m glad I was a part of it,” said Dianca. “It was a great concert, it was awesome. I love Jay-Z.”
Clutching an Eminem tee and bubbling with post-show energy, Christina was grateful for the opportunity to see the superstar MCs work magic in the D. “It was amazing. I’m glad I didn’t miss it,” she enthused. “I’m glad I got to be there. I really feel sorry for everyone who did miss it but it was awesome.”
Juanita trekked from Jacksonville, Florida but conceded that the Motown show was a singular event.
“I loved everything ’cause I love Jay-Z. I loved the [extra guests] they brought out, I love Dr. Dre. I love everybody, Eminem, everybody!” she said. “Go Detroit, yeah! Only in the D!”

Verizon Android world phone at the FCC

If there’s ever been any doubt that Verizon is the current king of Android, you can put it to rest now. The HTC PD42100 — a horizontal slider dual CDMA/GSM "world phone" that we’ve seen once before — has made its way through the Federal Communications Commission. In addition to being able to work overseas, it’s sporting Wifi b/g/n a 4-inch display, and possibly one of the fastest processors ever crammed into a production phone. (We’ll have to see on that, of course.) And then, of course, there is the keyboard. If anybody knows how to make a horizontal slider, it’s HTC. Fedor and M-1 calling out Overeem

It’s the fight Strikeforce has wanted to book for a while. Alistair Overeem has called out Fedor Emelianenko but been rebuffed at every turn. He’s gone as far as ripping Fedor’s management, suggesting it didn’t want to put its fighter in harm’s way. Well, either Fedor is tired of the talk or M-1 Global realized that the guy many considered the best heavyweight in MMA needs a big win to restore his reputation. Fedor told mixfight.ru that he wanted a rematch against Fabricio Werdum. If that doesn’t happen, he’d like Overeem by the end of the year."Absolutely, I would like a rematch with Werdum. But as he was recently operated on , then as soon as this fight is unlikely to happen," said Fedor. "This year, in November/December, I would prefer to meet in a cage with Alistair Overeem." M-1 just sent out a release echoing those wishes.Conversations have been taking place behind closed doors between M-1 Global and Strikeforce for some time and injuries, timing and differences of opinion have been roadblocks to putting Overeem and Emelianenko together. "M-1 Global wants to make this fight happen," says M-1’s Director of Operations, Evgeni Kogan. "As a global mixed martial arts company committed to driving the evolution of the sport and showcasing match-ups that the fans deserve to see, we want to make this bout a reality in 2010."There’s been doubts in the past whether Fedor was really in full control of his career. Sounds like he is now. "This is an important match for me and something that I personally want to happen," says Fedor. "There have been conversations about putting this match-up together in the past and now is the time to begin making this bout possible." In late June, Fedor (32-2) lost for the first time in 10 years when he was upset by Werdum. Werdum could be considered Strikeforce’s No. 1 heavyweight, but it’s Overeem who holds the promotion’s heavyweight title belt. We called it shortly after the fight, Showtime and Strikeforce needed to make the best fight possible for Fedor, in his last match under contract. Some said Werdum and Overeem should match up. That was nonsense. The promotion needs to make maximum dollars in what could be Fedor’s final fight with the promotion, and the bout even casual fans want to see is Fedor versus Overeem. While this fight is speculative, Strikeforce did announce Wednesday that K.J. Noons will turn around quickly, move up to 170 pounds and challenge Nick Diaz for his Strikeforce welterweight title on Oct. 9. Diaz has been a floating up to 180 pounds for fights over the last 18 months. Now he gets a chance to avenge his 2007 upset loss against Noons. The cries for a Diaz-Jason "Mayhem" Miller fight fell on deaf ears. That fight might make for some great trash talk, but frankly Miller is better served worrying about the middleweight title mix. A rematch against Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, the new Strikeforce 185 champion, is a natural as well. Miller lost to Jacare in 2008 and the rematch in 2009 was declared a no-contest when Souza suffered a nasty cut because an illegal kick by Mayhem.

Though he has 17 wins, including 12 submissions, Gabe Ruediger has left two lasting impressions on most fight fans. One is when he was dismissed from "The Ultimate Fighter" for failing to make weight and two, when Melvin Guillard knocked him out with a body shot. But now, Ruediger wants to make a different impressions. Instead of being the guy who ate ice cream cake the night before a weigh-in, he wants to be the man who beats his TUF castmate Joe Lauzon.Since he’s been out of the UFC, he has left Team Quest, rehabbed a neck injury, and claims he’s in the best shape of his life.I was looking at pictures of the last UFC I was in and I can’t believe the difference in me. But everything, really. My striking is much improved. You look at a number of my recent wins, which came by submission, but I set them all up with punches. It has been a long, arduous journey. I’ve matured. I don’t think I was ready for TUF. Skills wise, I was. But mentally I let it get to me. I think if I would have gone far there I would have started partying and stuff. Now, I’m all about the fight.Ruediger got his chance at Lauzon because Terry Etim dropped out of the scheduled bout three weeks ago.

Google Chrome 6 goes stable, 2nd birthday celebration brings extension and autofill sync

Filed under: Google, BrowsersIt’s Chrome’s second birthday today, and in addition to posting some fancy-schmancy images to celebrate Google Chrome’s stable channel has been bumped to version 6. For those of you still keeping tabs on version changes, it’s only been four months since Chrome 5 went stable.

The update means that all Chrome users can now take advantage of extension and autofill sync — both important parts of Google’s desire to keep your ‘browsing platform’ uniform across all the computers you use.

Version 6 also brings the new consolidated menu, richer content settings (JavaScript, plug-ins, notifications, and the like), and the first-run search engine selection screen. There’s also a faster V8 JavaScript engine under the hood.

No announcement yet from the Chrome Blog, but we’ll add a link once their official post has gone live. In the meantime, the Chromium blog has a breakdown of some of the more important security updates and feature additions.

‘Jacare’ wins Strikeforce middleweight belt with decision over Kennedy

In the fight that decided the winner of the vacant Strikeforce middleweight belt, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza won a unanimous decision over Tim Kennedy, with the judges cards reading 49-46, 48-47, 48-47. Jacare, known as one of the world’s best in jiu-jitsu, kept the first round standing, landing effective strikes in the first round. Kennedy counterpunched, but Jacare had an answer for every offensive move that Kennedy made. That continued into the second round. Jacare wore down Kennedy, though Kennedy did stuff Jacare’s takedown attempt.In the third round, Jacare opened up a cut over Kennedy’s left eye with a big right hand. Not long after his face started bleeding, Kennedy took Jacare down, but surprisingly, Jacare did not want to stay there. He got out from under Kennedy and brought the fight back to its feet for the rest of the round.In the fourth, Kennedy seemed to land more punches, but they did not cause much damage. With about a minute and a half left in the fourth round, Kennedy landed an indavertent blow to Jacare’s groin. Jacare was given time to recover, with while Kennedy’s eye continued to bleed. The fight was delayed longer because of a problem with the fight clock. Kennedy’s striking improved in the final round, but in the last 30 seconds of the round, Jacare landed two flush strikes that wobbled Kennedy. Kennedy answered with a takedownm bringing Jacare to the ground for a millisecond before Jacare leapt to his feet. After the decision was announced, Kennedy was confused and upset with the call from the judges. "The best grappler in the world couldn’t get me down, and I took him down a few times," Kennedy said. "I’ve said it before. I don’t like judges. I won’t be here again." The fight was as close as prognosticators expected, but Jacare’s striking was effective throughout the match. The grappling expert showed that he is just as comfortable on his feet as he is on the ground, and because of that, he is the newly crowned Strikeforce middleweight champ.
